The baobab tree, also known as “the tree of life”, is native to many parts of Africa. Having spent the first 11 years of my life in South Africa, this feels very special to me; I have seen it many times. Going on to become a Psychologist, I love what it represents. The tree offers support for entire communities and ecosystems. This includes animals and people. The tree offers shelter from rain, storms, and intense heat. It is also fruit bearing.
In Narrative Therapy, we use the metaphor of fruits, nuts, and seeds to represent the ‘gifts’ we pass on to others. This could be gifts of being cared for, passing on values or things that are important to us. I wholly align with the idea of our Practice being a space where this could also occur. Not only do we strive to offer a space of psychological safety and care, but the practice of psychology is about equipping you.
To me, this is what working in this profession is about. Passing along knowledge, the gift of compassion and hope of being able to achieve whatever goals you set for yourself with regards to your wellbeing. The baobab tree also symbolizes resilience and endurance. With its unique look and branches resembling roots, I think this is a lovely way to honor the uniqueness of every individual we work with and support you in your journey to weather whatever storm you experience.
